We dragged ourselves out of bed on this frigid, windy morning in New York City to catch the Fall/Winter 2011 presentation of designer Rachel Roy, who presented her collection at Lincoln Center's Library for the Performing Arts. Roy and stylist Tiina Laakonen put together 26 looks that 'exuded confidence, an eclectic mix of playful layering, multimedia and rich texture.'
The collection offered a bevy of choices especially for the multicultural mixer and matcher (Peruvian tweed/kimono jackets). From outerwear (rust boiled wool coat), to eveningwear (conifer glass embroidered gown), Roy offered something divine for every occasion and lifestyle. The California native also presented 8 looks for fall in continuation of her Trench Capsule Collection that were constructed out of denim.
Never one to miss a show, we caught-up with celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson (pictured right), who was fresh off a red eye from the Grammys, where he styled Janelle Monáe's pompadour to new heights for her performance with BoB and Bruno Mars. "I literally landed and then met with Rachel to discuss the hair concept for today's presentation," says Gibson for L'Oreal, whose New York styling team also manned the tresses at the shows of Vena Cava, Lela Rose and Carmen Marc Valvo.
We spoke to Gibson's latest mentee, Sade Williams (pictured left) from the Ted Gibson Salon New York, about the look for the collection. "When Ted and Rachel met, she expressed that she wanted to create a look of innocence. For Ted, innocence comes in the form of two braided pigtails that come around the head and 2 inches away from the forehead," says Williams. "Each braid on the model is interlaced with two different fabrics from the collection to give the hair a very distractive Rachel Roy look."
Roy and makeup maven Bobbi Brown teamed-up for another season of beauty, but instead of seeing a strong, black, edgy eye like we did for spring, fall is all about blend able hues. "In terms of colors for the makeup, Rachel and I talked about a lot of sparkle. The color focus was green - in particular, olive green. We wanted to use colors that gradually blend into each other," says Brown.
If you want to recreate the Rachel Roy fall/winter 2011 eye, Brown says, don't! "You never want to take a runway a look and copy it exactly because it would be too much," Brown advises. "But, do take pieces of the look you want to recreate by using a toned-down application." She suggests using a sage or olive shimmer eye shadow, a dash of gold glitter and, finally, puckering up with an orangey-brown 'twiggy' color lipstick then blot.
